While much of the industry’s attention has been focused on the risks of cyberattackers stealing data, many law firms and legal departments may be facing a similar, though potentially more jeopardizing threat — losing company data entirely. And according to a survey by Kroll Ontrack of 572 companies throughout North America, Europe, and Asia, data loss can be an unintended and onerous consequence of some fairly conventional and necessary IT processes.

Around one-third of companies surveyed by Kroll reported losing data while migrating data to other devices or upgrading operating systems. What’s more worrisome, however, is that while 57 percent of the companies had back up data solutions, 75 percent of them reported not being able to restore all of their lost data, with almost a quarter of them unable to cover any lost data.
