It’s no secret that people’s data is out there. But what the government and private businesses do with that data is often unbeknownst to those from whom it is collected.

In “Data Collection and Ownership: The Role of the Private Sector,” a panel at NYU’s “Tyranny of the Algorithm?: Predictive Analytics & Human Rights,” experts discussed a range of issues around the relationship between tech companies, governments, and citizen data. The speakers in this session included Michael Posner, professor at NYU Stern School of Business and co-director of Stern Center for Business and Human Rights; Sarah Labowitz, co-director, NYU Stern Center for Business and Human Rights; and Andrew McLaughlin, partner at Betaworks.
