Criminal misappropriation against intellectual property (IP) is not a new phenomenon, but in the digital age, it can be more dangerous and easily executed than ever before. Take, for example, a case of recent cyberespionage, where according to a U.S. Steel complaint, Chinese officials breached the company’s networks and stole trade secrets on proprietary steel products. But victims of IP infringement need not be large, well-known companies — everyday criminals can cause havoc for any businesses marketing or selling a brand in an online marketplace.

The problem of IP misappropriation is perhaps nowhere more acute than in the mobile app marketplace. Some companies, however, are fighting back, such as Wolters Kluwer’s Corsearch, which recently announced the release of its Corsearch Mobile App Vigilance platform to help protect the IP rights of app publishers.
