The honeymoon with cloud-based apps, whose efficiency and productivity benefits fueled an exponential rise in use within organizations across industries, may be coming to a quick end. A report by Netskope concluded that current cloud apps in use are not only violating data regulations, but unbeknownst to its users, are increasingly hosting a variety of malware as well.

The June 2016 Netskope Cloud Report surveyed over 22,000 apps, finding that slightly over 75 percent did not adhere to the European Union’s upcoming General Data Protection Regulation , a set of laws concerning the privacy, retention, processing and transfer of EU data that is set to come into effect in the summer of 2018. Companies found violating the GDPR may be fined up to 4 percent of their worldwide revenue.
