Though closely related, securing data from breaches and maintaining data privacy are wholly different legal concerns and processes. But in the minds of consumers, the two are one in the same, and companies are held accountable for their execution, according to a recent survey by Brunswick Insight of more than 7,000 consumers across Asia, Europe and the Americas.

More respondents defined data privacy as limiting access to information than processing or using said information in undisclosed ways. Slightly over half (53 percent) said data privacy meant information “will not be used or accessed by unauthorized individuals or parties,” compared to 25 percent who said it meant data “will only be used for agreed purposes.”
