It’s been a busy week for Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine, but who’d have guessed the democratic vice presidential candidate would cross paths with legal tech? This convergence happened around artificial intelligence (AI), as University of Waterloo research professor Maura Grossman and her research partner collaborated with the Library of Virginia to use a continuous active learning (CAL) search engine to peruse Virginia archives for information on Kaine. As reported by Susan Beck for law.com, there are around 140,000 records deemed not privileged or restricted and thus available to search, a third of the 1.2 million documents compiled during the Kaine administration.
In testing the CAL system, which uses a yes/no ranking system to refine searches, Beck writes about entering “McGuireWoods” into the search field. A result she receives is a 2009 email to Virginia officials from Venable, in which the law firm recommends the state port authority wave a conflict that involves McGuireWoods.
