Federal registration of a trademark provides important legal rights and benefits to brand owners. The most visually apparent to the public is the right to use the federal registration symbol ® with the trademark. Other legal advantages include prima facie evidence of the owner’s exclusive right to use the trademark nationwide with the registered goods and services and the validity of the trademark; a presumption that the registrant is the owner of the trademark; and constructive notice of ownership to infringers.

Here’s one more: Several social media sites require a brand owner to have a registered trademark before taking action to remove an infringing use of a trademark. Trademark infringement is the unauthorized use of a trademark in connection with goods or services that is likely to cause confusion, deception, or mistake about the source of those goods or services. Social media sites usually provide convenient online forms for brand owners or their counsel to report occurrences of trademark infringement.
