While not quite a dirty little secret, the difficulty most Americans face in accessing legal services is often a topic from which legal professionals often shy away. But the issue was front-and-center in an Oct. 6 panel at Thomson Reuters’ annual Law Firm Leaders Forum, titled, “The Future of Legal Services in the United States: The ABA Issues a Clarion Call for Change.”

Here, leaders from business, technology, the American Bar Association, government and the courtroom discussed the challenge faced by most Americans looking for legal representation and the lawyer’s obligation to shorten the justice gap. Speakers cited research compiled for a report titled “Report on the Future of Legal Services in the United States,” which included a list of recommendations for making justice more accessible for those that currently cannot afford legal fees.
