Legal technology has long been viewed as optional rather than a requisite, though if increasing complexity of compliance is an indicator, that view may soon change.

2016 saw a flux of legal technologies that dealt with compliance challenges, as events like the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the EU-U.S. Privacy Shield have unearthed new, intricate challenges for technologists, lawyers and business leaders across the world. Further, threats raised by the increase in data breaches this year underscored a heightened sense of risk across industries. And as the challenges become more difficult to mount, the abilities of counsel decreased in turn, and in the rush to cut costs, technology seemed to hold the answer.
