The family of William “Bill” Butterfield has announced that the noted attorney and e-discovery expert passed away on December 13, 2016, at the age of 63. A partner at Hausfeld LLP in Washington, D.C., Butterfield was chair of the firm’s Financial Services practice group, where he concentrated on financial services and antitrust litigation.
To the legal technology community, Butterfield was known as a frequent author and speaker on e-discovery topics, being one of six lawyers in the country ranked by Chambers and Partners as Band 1 for Litigation: E-Discovery. In 2011, he testified before the House Judiciary Committee, Subcommittee on the Constitution on the costs and burden of civil discovery. In recent days, he was a frequent speaker at conferences and webinars discussing the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure amendments, such as an ASU-Arkfeld debate on cooperation and a Zapproved webinar on spoliation.
