Many tech companies and privacy advocates are hoping to see the Email Privacy Act passed soon by the U.S. Senate following its recent approval by the House of Representatives.

Under the proposal (HR 387), the government essentially would need to get a search warrant to gain access to older stored emails. Now, such emails basically can be obtained without a warrant after 180 days, according to supporters of the act.
