Data broker Spokeo Inc. on June 12 agreed to pay $800,000 to settle Federal Trade Commission charges that it violated the Fair Credit Reporting Act when it sold employers profiles of prospective hires as a way to screen job applicants.

“Explore beyond the resume,” Spokeo allegedly urged human resources professionals, job recruiters, and others in marketing its profiles containing information such as a person’s marital status, age range, ethnicity, hobbies, and religion from 2008 to 2010. The Pasadena, Calif.-based company culls information from hundreds of social networking sites, data brokers, and other sources.
