Riverbed Technology makes devices and software that make the internet run faster and smoother. The San Francisco-based company’s flagship product is the Steelhead Appliance, which boosts the efficiency of network traffic. Its other major products include Stingray, which enables application delivery, traffic management and load balancing, and Cascade, which manages network performance. The company was founded in 2002, went public in 2006 and reported year-end 2011 revenue of $726.5 million, up 32 percent from previous-year results. The company employs 1,700 workers in 40 countries.
