South Bay semiconductor manufacturer Applied Materials Inc. announced Monday that longtime General Counsel Joseph Sweeney is to step down by the end of the year. Replacing him is Thomas Larkins, who is currently a vice president and deputy general counsel at manufacturing giant Honeywell.

Sweeney, 64, who joined Applied Materials in 1993 as head of the legal department, previously served as in-house counsel at several other semiconductor manufacturers and technology companies.
