SHMsoft Inc. has added new review features to its FreeEed open-source e-discovery application. These include optical character recognition (OCR), internationalization, and a browser-based, first-look document review.

FreeEed software indexes documents for subsequent legal review. It is intended for enterprises bringing e-discovery in-house, for integrators and consultants preparing e-discovery tool boxes, and for auditors who need to do e-discovery tasks without incurring high costs. The software helps users perform a first-pass review or cull down data volume before sending it to an e-discovery vendor, helping reduce costs. FreeEed is completely open source, and is based on the Apache Software Foundation’s Hadoop open-source software.
