Last week Microsoft released the free Windows 8.1 upgrade and Ryan Nakashima from the Associated Press weighed in on the crucial differences between the dot upgrade and the original release.

Nakashima notes that Windows 8.1 offers both the traditional desktop view and a tile interface, catering to desktops and new-age devices alike. “The update adds some new finger- and gesture-friendly shortcuts for touch-based apps,” he says, while “restoring some respect for the desktop mode that a million PC users have become accustomed to.”
