Sure, technology is now capable of archiving all of a company’s electronic data, for as long as they’re in business. But who would want to?

Not the CFO, since storage is far from cheap when you add in the costs of information technology infrastructure and personnel. Not your in-house counsel either, since the retention of irrelevant data can actually lead to significant litigation risk and cost. Even the compliance department is likely to balk at keeping certain data, such as personal records, longer than its life cycle.
