Anyone who has ever balked at the price of a hotel in midtown Manhattan likely knows about the website Airbnb. The online company facilitates room rentals from people in over 34,000 cities and 192 countries, according to its website and has handy “neighborhood guides” on its homepage & the first of which is New York City.

But, according to Elizabeth Harris in The New York Times this week, renting out many of the homes and apartments on the site are illegal according to New York City and state law. Harris notes that in most residential apartments, unless you have a visitor, it is illegal to rent out your space when you are not there. There is more leniency when it comes to single family homes, but often zoning laws restrict owners from renting those units as well.
