Document management is commonplace among law firms of every size, but the task has undergone a fairly dynamic evolution over the past few years. The definition of “document” has shifted and the management process is no longer just about the efficient filing and retrieval of the mountains of consequential papers for which every firm is responsible. Today, it’s also about managing file formats—copying, scanning, and converting everything from paper documents to PDF files and Web pages.

Nuance Communications Inc. has played a key role in the evolution of document management. The Burlington, Mass.-based company best-known for its Dragon Naturally Speaking speech processing software has been developing the OmniPage line of Microsoft Windows-based document conversion and scanning systems through 19 product generations. Earlier this year, the company released OmniPage Ultimate, the successor to OmniPage 18, and a significant upgrade of the popular product.
