Last April, a gun attack on the Pacific Gas & Electric Metcalf substation in Silicon Valley took out 17 transformers.
As Katharine Tweed explained in an entry on the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Spectrum’s energy blog, although the attack caused significant damage, there was no power outage. However, Tweed says the incident did reignite concerns over the physical security of the electricity grid in the U.S. and elsewhere.
