Lawyers have a dizzying array of handheld portable storage options today. Digital film cards, portable hard drives and USB flash drives (aka thumb drives) all offer a variety of uses.
For example, New Hampshire solo practitioner Bruce Dorner relies on his USB flash drive to “temporarily back up documents I’m working on — when I know my network won’t protect a document in draft until late that night.” Illinois lawyer and legal technologist Nerino Petro Jr. uses a USB-connected external portable hard drive “to back up my documents as a secondary backup approach. That way I know if my main full system backup fails, I’ve got a fallback plan.”
