After months of uncertainty prompted by antitrust scrutiny, Blackboard Inc. said Monday it received federal approval for its acquisition of WebCT Inc., its primary rival in providing online, or “distance learning” software.
Blackboard’s roughly $180 million purchase of WebCT had surprised educators, investors and the Department of Justice, which in November expanded its probe into the deal. The outcome, which Washington-based Blackboard learned late Friday, largely came down to how antitrust enforcers defined the market for education software.
