An accurate assessment of the target company’s data sources is essential to successful e-discovery. Companies’ information technology infrastructures vary widely, with a range of hardware and software used. An infrastructure may also vary within the target company if the time frame in question is extensive or if the company has a variety of geographic locations.

Creating a comprehensive picture of the type and location of all data throughout the organization encompasses the investigation and identification of the following items:

  • Servers: both those with active and dynamic data, such as file servers and e-mail servers:
  • Data management systems: document management systems, back-up tapes, financial systems, disaster recovery/restoration systems;
  • Devices: desktop and laptop computers, PDAs, cell phones and myriad other devices;
  • Other media: hard drives, tape backups, flash drives, CD-ROMs and DVDs.
