Documents created on Microsoft Word and some other word processing software contain information that does not appear on the face of the document, known as “metadata.” This includes the identity of individuals who have revised the document and the date and time it was saved.
It may also include earlier versions of the document and black lines that track changes. Some of this information may reflect client communications, the attorney’s thought processes or other confidential information. If it is not removed before a file is transmitted by e-mail, it can be recovered by any recipient, in many cases with a single click of the mouse.
