Regional wireless carriers such as MetroPCS Communications Inc. and Leap Wireless International Inc. that offer prepaid plans with unlimited local minutes are among the fastest-growing companies in mobile telecommunications. As their business models and customer bases develop, these carriers are increasingly viewed as potential buyers or targets.

“We believe a combination of Metro and Leap to be almost inevitable given the similarity in business models and expected future overlap in markets,” UBS Investment Research analyst John Hodulik wrote in a recent report. He compared the telecoms to Southwest Airlines Co. and JetBlue Airways Corp. in providing underserved markets with low-cost service that still has attractive margins.
