Google Inc.’s $625 million acquisition of e-mail security firm Postini Inc. highlights the mounting corporate demand for technology tools that are used online.

Indeed, the deal announced Monday, July 9, while small compared with some of the search giant’s other acquisitions, is important in underscoring the increasing competition between Internet companies and traditional software makers and in hinting at how Google expects to diversify its business.
