It didn’t have the megaconference feel of LegalTech or the techy-vibe of ILTA, but the International Quality & Productivity Center‘s “Best Practices for Information Retention and E-Discovery Management” conference held in Jersey City, N.J., on Oct. 2 and 3 seemed to have just the right mix of substance and schmooze. There were about 20 exhibitors, many of whom also made presentations at the conference. Of the intimate feel, Epiq Systems‘ Dan Dejoy, director of Discovery Systems noted, “I would rather make a few key contacts than get a fishbowl filled with business cards.”

A smaller conference with a more targeted message offers guidance on the nuances of e-discovery, rather than an overview of legal technology in general, added the discovery coordinator at one New York firm. But despite the attendance of law firm team members, there was a distinct in-house focus in the programming and presentation. This was likely due to the continued shift of e-discovery control and resources away from law firms toward internal organizational management.
