Courtroom setbacks for Sirius XM Radio Inc. helped spawn a fresh wave of copyright lawsuits last week, with new plaintiffs targeting online music services over older recordings that were once considered beyond the reach of artists’ and record companies’ royalty demands.

But Sirius could still salvage its defenses—and begin to reverse the plaintiffs’ momentum—if a California appeals court grants the company’s pending plea for intervention.
