Faced with a $300 million patent infringement suit, Symantec Corp. argued last year that the IP licensing giant Intellectual Ventures couldn’t seek a massive payday for patents it acquired on the cheap. The judge wasn’t persuaded, but Symantec’s lawyers at Latham & Watkins at least got a jury to limit the damage.

A federal jury in Delaware awarded Intellectual Ventures $17 million on Friday, capping a trial that pitted Latham’s Dean Dunlavey and Douglas Lumish against a team from Susman Godfrey that included Parker Folse and Brooke Taylor. The jurors found that Symantec infringed two patents related to software security technology. But they cleared Symantec of infringing a third patent, and the verdict puts Symantec on the hook for just a fraction of the $299 million in damages IV was seeking.
