Former federal prosecutor Michael Bromwich has joined the legal team assisting Christine Blasey Ford, who has accused U.S. Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of sexually assaulting her when they were in high school.

In a letter Saturday, Bromwich resigned his position as senior counsel at Washington, D.C., law firm Robbins, Russell, Englert, Orseck, Untereiner & Sauber, saying: “My role will likely require me to appear publicly on Dr. Ford's behalf, and the Senate is being advised of my involvement this afternoon. Because objections have been raised within the partnership to my doing so while employed by the firm, I am resigning from the firm, effective immediately.”

Robbins Russell said in a statement Sunday that Bromwich left because of a mutual agreement “to ensure that his efforts would not be colored by or in conflict with” the firm's work before the high court and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit.

Kavanaugh has been a judge on the D.C. Circuit since 2006.

The firm said “a decision was made several months ago that the firm and Mike would part ways, and his final day had been set for next month, when we will move offices.” Bromwich's departure date was moved up when he notified the firm that he had the opportunity to represent Ford.

Responding to the firm's statement, Bromwich said Sunday, “The firm and I agreed to part ways some time ago. My taking on the representation of Christine Blasey Ford accelerated my departure but did not cause it.”

Bromwich, who is the founder and managing principal of consulting firm The Bromwich Group, has most recently represented former FBI deputy director Andrew McCabe. He is well known in Washington, having served, among other positions, as inspector general for the U.S. Department of Justice and as the country's top offshore drilling regulator in the wake of the Deepwater Horizon accident and oil spill.

The Bromwich Group, founded in 2012, states that it “offers independent monitoring, crisis management, strategic advisory, public affairs, and law enforcement consulting services.

In joining Ford's legal team, Bromwich will be working primarily with her lead attorneys, Debra Katz and Lisa Banks of Washington's Katz, Marshall & Banks.

Katz said Saturday that her client has accepted the invitation by Senate Judiciary Republicans to testify next week. Ford is set to testify before the judiciary committee Thursday, according to the committee.
