Our runners up for Litigator of the Week include a team from Latham & Watkins led by partner Daniel Schecter and associate Nima Mohebbi on behalf of the founders of online fashion pioneer Gavrieli Brands, LLC.

After a six-week trial, a 12-person jury in Long Beach, California on Nov. 12 ruled in favor of Latham's clients on claims for breach of fiduciary duty, fraud, conversion and breach of contract. The jury awarded Latham's clients more than $20 million in compensatory damages and another $16.5 million in punitive damages—and rejected the defendant's claim to majority ownership and control of the company.

At Covington & Burling, a team of international arbitration experts scored a milestone win for Ukraine in proceedings against the Russian Federation.

Covington partners Marney Cheek, Jonathan Gimblett and David Zionts, in partnership with Professor Harold Hongju Koh of Yale Law School and Professor Jean-Marc Thouvenin of Paris-Nanterre University led the team in litigation before the International Court of Justice.

At issue: violations by Russia of the International Convention for the Suppression of the Financing of Terrorism and the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination stemming from its invasion of Ukraine.

The court on Nov. 8 held that it has jurisdiction to hear Ukraine's claims—marking the first time Russia will have to account for violating international law before the ICJ.
