Even before President Joe Biden took the White House, a chorus of progressive voices was calling for the next Democratic president to focus on the diversity of the federal bench.

Those calls were spurred in no small part by the Trump administration's record on judges. President Trump's nominees for both district and circuit court seats were overwhelmingly white and male. More than 73% of Trump's district court nominees were men and more than 83% were white, and those percentages were even higher in the circuit courts where Trump didn't put forward a single Black nominee.
