Smith, Gambrell & Russell partner and former Georgia Supreme Court Chief Justice Leah Ward Sears will lead a 16-member Federal Nominations Advisory Commission to review candidates for federal judicial, U.S. attorney and U.S. marshal positions, Georgia Sens. Reverend Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff said Tuesday.

The new senators “wanted to flip the system on its head,” a spokesman told the Daily Report Tuesday. Instead of “mainly having white trial lawyers” on the commission, they are “prioritizing diversity to reflect the state,” and “going even further by making it public to increase transparency.” The commission has 12 people of color, half of whom are women. They also have diverse job backgrounds—trial lawyers, judges, civil rights leaders, criminal justice reform advocates and others.
