Welcome to the latest edition of the Lit Daily's In-House Litigation Leaders series focusing on lawyers making the hiring decisions, shaping the strategies and managing the caseloads at some of the nation's largest and most innovative companies.

Meet, Carlos Brown, the senior vice president, general counsel and chief compliance officer of Dominion Energy. Brown heads the legal department at the Richmond, Virginia-based Fortune 500 energy company that provides gas and electric utility services in 19 states. Prior to joining the company, Brown was trained as a transactional attorney at McGuireWoods, formed his own transactional boutique law firm and helped launch a private equity firm. He was recruited to Dominion in 2007 where he has served in a variety of roles, including running a portfolio of seven power generation stations and heading the company's alternative energy efforts, prior to heading up litigation in 2016 and taking on the GC role at the company in 2017. We recently spoke for nearly an hour about his career path and approach to litigation. I found his thoughts so insightful that I'm breaking up our conversation into two columns. What follows has been edited for length and clarity.
