My grandfather did not like crowds.

Whenever Doc, as we’d call him, would come to a school function of mine or my sister’s – be it a band concert, a graduation ceremony, or any such community event – he would sit close to the exit. Chances were he would head out to the breezeway of the school gymnasium sometime during the goings-on to catch his breath.
