There’s never been an MDL bigger than the massive 275,000-plus plaintiff case against 3M claiming its combat earplugs were defective and led to hearing loss and ringing ears for U.S. service members.

And now — 16 trials into the aggressive bellwether trial schedule laid out by U.S. District Judge M. Casey Rodgers in Pensacola, Florida — there’s never been a bigger award to a single plaintiff: This past week a federal jury awarded $77.5 million in damages to former Army combat engineer Jay Beal, including $72 million in punitive damages. (There was one verdict of $110 million split between two plaintiffs earlier this year, however.)
