Some former athletes like to talk about their on-the-field exploits. But when I tracked down former minor league pitcher Garrett Broshuis recently, he was more interested in sharing what things were like for him and his teammates off the field. 

“I’ll never forget being invited over to some of my Latino teammates’ apartments after games for dinner,” Broshuis said. “Eight guys crammed into a three-bedroom apartment: They didn’t have furniture anywhere. They just had air mattresses.”
