Being a litigation partner at a Big Law firm is a parade of challenges. There are clients to respond to, matters to manage, and associates to train and mentor. All that’s before even contemplating forging any kind of personal life outside all those work responsibilities.

That makes litigators who take on additional managerial tasks for their firms all the more impressive. Over the past year, our colleagues at Law.com have used their “How I Made It” series to feature a number of litigators who serve in leadership posts, including four litigators who also act as local managing partners for their respective Am Law 50 law firms. This morning we’re going to hear from Nancy Chung, the managing partner of the New York office at Sidley Austin, Megan Nishikawa the office managing partner in San Francisco at Hogan Lovells, Petrina Hall McDaniel, the managing partner of the Atlanta office at Squire Patton Boggs, and Anthony (Tony) Barkow, the office managing partner in New York at Jenner & Block. At law firms that often are as big and complex as many of the clients they represent, some common issues face litigators who devote a significant portion of their time to management.
