The volume of securities class action litigation filings ticked up last year, according to the latest annual report from Cornerstone Research and the Stanford Law School Securities Class Action Clearinghouse. But lawyers on either side of the securities bar expect the projected pickup in capital markets activity to fuel even more new filings next year.

According to the latest numbers from Cornerstone, the overall volume of securities class actions increased in 2024 to 225 new filings from 215 in 2023. That marks the second year of growth after three consecutive years of decline. The total for what Cornerstone calls "core" filings—a tally that omits lawsuits seeking only additional disclosures in proposed mergers and acquisitions—increased from 209 in 2023 to 220 in 2024. That total is 14% higher than the historical average going back to 1997.
