BP PLC has lost a key ruling from a federal appeals court reviewing its $9.6 billion Deepwater Horizon oil spill settlement.

On Monday, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit affirmed U.S. District Judge Carl Barbier’s conclusion that proof of causation—in other words, that damages were caused directly by the 2010 disaster—wasn’t required under the terms of the settlement.
