The upstart technology company Aereo Inc. forced the U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday into a wide-ranging debate not just about the future of television but also the fate of cloud computing and other innovations.

The hourlong argument in ABC v. Aereo followed its high-profile buildup as a life-or-death struggle between major networks whose lifeblood is license fees for their programming, and a new model that delivers programs to viewers without paying those fees.
