After a brief hiatus—and some promising developments for patent defendants—the patent plaintiff Phoenix Licensing LLC fired off a new round of infringement lawsuits in East Texas federal court on Friday, targeting 15 companies ranging from American Honda Motor Co. to Charter Communications Inc. to T-Mobile US Inc.
Since 2007 Phoenix and its alter ego LPL Licensing LLC—nonpracticing entities that share an Arizona post office box and exist only to assert their patents—have sued more than 100 major banks, insurance companies, airlines and other companies. The lawsuits allege infringement of a handful of patents centered on methods for personalizing marketing materials that businesses send to their customers.
