How’s this for an unlucky coincidence?
On Monday, as we reported, international arbitration pro Matthew Slater of Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton lost a U.S. Supreme Court bid to overturn a $185 million arbitration award against one client—the Republic of Argentina. On Tuesday, Slater suffered a nearly identical defeat at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit—only this time the award was for $186 million, and the unlucky client was Oao Samaraneftegaz, a onetime Yukos Oil Company subsidiary that was absorbed by a Russian state-owned company.
