In his 16 years as a judge, U.S. District Judge William Pauley III in Manhattan has surely seen uglier cases than a legal brawl between two ex-service members who made a fortune contracting for the U.S. military. But the case clearly got under Pauley’s skin.

Pauley ruled Wednesday that John DeBlasio, a former co-owner of military contractor Sallyport Global Holdings Inc., must pay his former partner Thomas Charron Jr. about $15.8 million under the terms of a December 2010 deal between the two. But the judge also found Charron liable for unjust enrichment and conversion, stemming from approximately $227,000 in payments he made to himself as the 2010 stock buyout deal closed.
