The asbestos plaintiffs firm Weitz & Luxenberg told federal investigators that when it hired New York Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver in 2002, it never expected Silver to work on actual cases, or even to refer any clients. Instead, the firm said, Silver’s presence was intended to grow the firm’s “prestige.”

Things haven’t exactly turned out that way.
