Jones Day’s lucrative involvement in American Apparel’s nasty falling-out with founder Dov Charney landed the firm back in the news this week, when Charney suggested that Jones Day carried out a hatchet job at the company’s behest.

Represented by Keith Fink and Olaf Muller of Fink & Steinberg, Charney filed a $30 million lawsuit Thursday in Los Angeles Superior Court, accusing hedge fund Standard General of defamation and interference with economic relations, among other allegations. Charney was fired from his position as American Apparel’s chairman and CEO in December, amid accusations of sexual harassment and mismanagement. The complaint alleges that his ouster followed a “sham” investigation that, under an agreement reached between Standard General and the retailer, was supposed to be conducted by an independent third party and overseen by a special committee of American Apparel’s board. Instead, according to Charney, the investigation was improperly handled by Jones Day, which at the time served as American Apparel’s counsel.
