Doling out sanctions over billionaire real estate mogul Roger Wang’s failure to show for a deposition, a federal judge in Manhattan has dismissed a securities case brought by Wang’s wife over Bear Stearns & Co.’s collapse in 2008.
U.S. District Judge Robert Sweet on Friday criticized Vivine and Roger Wang, along with their longtime lawyer Mohammed Ghods of Ghods Law Firm, for “playing a game of hide-the-plaintiff.” Despite multiple attempts to schedule Roger Wang’s deposition, Wang and Ghods never committed to a date, according to Sweet. In January, several defense lawyers flew from New York for a deposition in Los Angeles, less than three miles from the Wangs’ Beverly Hills residence, but Wang didn’t show. “The Wangs and Mr. Ghods have willfully evaded and obstructed discovery,” Sweet wrote. The judge also ordered the Wangs and Ghods to cover the defense lawyers’ expenses for the deposition.
