I remember the first time that I really saw her, in the sense of noticing her, rather than merely glancing at her. It was 20 years ago, a time when my world had no limits. I had made partner ten months ago, and was blessed with a beautiful wife and two young daughters who were Daddy’s girls. I had a new house on an acre lot, and no gray hair. I was strong as an ox, in the best shape of my life. Life was very good, and the future looked even brighter. I was confident to the point of being cocky, but I had good reason for my self-confidence.
I was about to begin my first trial where I was the first chair, the top dog. It was a products liability case with a plaintiff who was a young man who was rendered a paraplegic after a horrible accident. The plaintiff would be very sympathetic even to the most calloused jury. Our defense was focused on blaming the injury on the fault of another manufacturer, one who was bankrupt.
