As Apple Inc. general counsel Bruce Sewell and FBI director James Comey on Tuesday squared off before the House Judiciary Committee in a hearing on iPhone encryption, Rep. Cedric Richmond, D-Louisiana, offered up a photo of Brittney Mills.

The Baton Rouge, Louisiana, woman, who was eight months pregnant, was shot and killed on April 24, 2015, when she opened her front door. Her murder remains unsolved, but friends say she kept a detailed diary on her iPhone. The problem is, the police can’t open it. No one knows her four-digit passcode.
