So long as you don’t mind, say, a 22-year-old from Sweden living in your house, having an au pair always struck me as a great bargain. You get 45 hours a week of child care for a mere $4.35 per hour, regardless of how many children you have, plus light housework.
Exploitative? Um, maybe a little. But the au pairs do get free room and board, go to school part-time and have the chance to spend a year in the United States.
